“You are bad. You are dirty. And you’ll never be worth anything.”
Those were his parting words to me.
And as I walked out of that apartment — after he sexually abused me — those words began to tangle my 4-year-old heart…
… the heart that woke up feeling special, the heart that woke up knowing it was lovable, the heart that had always felt fully accepted.
But that heart wasn’t the same anymore.
Because I believed his words. I mean when you’re 4-years-old, adults are supposed to be trustworthy. Right?
I was bad. I was dirty. And I was worthless.
And here I am… 40-something years later… still believing him.
What lies do you believe about yourself? Whose words do you decide are true?
Truth is, you can be tangled up in the “not good enoughs” for a million different reasons.
~ Maybe like me, yours stems from abuse.
~ Maybe you were told by a parent that you didn’t measure up.
~ Maybe a teacher or coach said or did something thoughtless.
~ Maybe you’re striving to look like women on the cover of magazines.
~ Maybe you’ve decided to try to be her.
~ Maybe you’ve been your own worst bully, saying the meanest things to yourself.
Regardless, here we are.
I’m so tired of circling this mountain, girls. Aren’t you?
Aren’t you ready to silence those messages of worthless that keep invading your self-esteem. Aren’t you tired of comparing the worst of you to the best of everyone else? Don’t you want to feel like you matter?
I do.
But you know what tightens the tangle even more? The fact that many of us KNOW what the Bible says about how God sees us, but we don’t believe it. We know that we’re fearfully and wonderfully made. We know we are the apple of His eye. We know that He delights in His creation… you and me.
But for some mind-numbing reason, that powerful and life-changing information doesn’t make the 18 inch journey from our head to our heart.
At least not as often as we’d like.
Maybe you aren’t really sure what God thinks about you. Maybe you don’t even know where to start. If that’s you, start HERE.
This week, we’re going to take a hard look at the Tangle of Worthlessness. It’s time to stare this one down, and surrender ourselves to the only One who can untangle us.
Julie is blogging about it at Women Who Believe today… click HERE.
And we’ll be at the Untangled Women Facebook community unpacking it even more. Click HERE for access.
Let’s untangle this one together.
Freedom from the chains of worthlessness is real.
Remember, God sees you sweet one. He knows your challenges… your failures… your struggles… your victories. And YOU — all of you — delight Him.
Because you are good enough.
