Words are so powerful because they carry an assignment.
All of them.
Every single one.
Think about it. Gracious words can lift you up when you’re feeling insignificant. They can blow life into a weary heart that feels forgotten. And they can affirm your efforts when you put yourself out there, trying something new.
But words can also knock you to your knees.
A careless comment can leave you feeling stupid. A simple sentence can make you feel inferior by “putting you in your place.” One mean phrase can close up your heart in self-protection.
Often on purpose — sometimes on accident — others can use their words to diminish you.
And it tangles you up because they say things that make you doubt you’ve anything to offer anyone—like you’re worthless.
So you wonder…
… Why would I get close to someone and risk another reminder that I don’t measure up?
… Why would I give someone else a chance to bruise to my heart?
… How do I trust enough to open myself up again?
And the answer may surprise you.
