“By day the LORD went ahead of them in a column of smoke to lead them on their way. By night he went ahead of them in a column of fire to give them light so that they could travel by day or by night.” (Exodus 13:21 GWT)
Although the Israelites packed up and followed Moses as they began their freedom march out of Egypt, God led the way.
He was in front.
No matter if it was day or night… no matter what direction they were going… no matter who was in charge… no matter their desires… God was in front.
Oh, I love this visual because it demonstrates the perfect position that God should have in our lives – no matter the circumstance.
The problem is that often we find ourselves running ahead, following our own path.
We take matters into our own hands.
We make decisions based on emotions and desires.
We fail to see the whole picture.
As I look back on my life, I see so many times where I was walking in front of God. I bet you do, too. And I realize that had I stopped to locate the position of God while in certain situations, I’d have seen that He wasn’t even on the same path as me.
I walked away from His leading in my life.
Sometimes it was a purposeful veer in a different direction.. and other times I didn’t even realize it.
When we are intentional in allowing God to be at the forefront of our lives, however, we begin to understand that our journeys are just plain better with Him forging the way.
We begin to regularly:
- Trust His direction.
- Seek His will.
- Believe He will provide.
The backseat become the comfortable position.
But when we choose to take the driver’s seat instead, we find ourselves unprotected from the Enemy…unable to navigate the terrain… and desperate for provision.
Every time.
Sisters, where in your life are you walking in front of God right now?
What’s keeping you from stepping aside and inviting God to lead instead?

I love how the bible talks about how when the presence of the Lord moved – they moved. That means obviously they weren’t moving all the time. I struggle with waiting for God to move. The in between time when His fire and column of smoke are not present is often my most challenging “lonely” times.

This is so difficult. It is easy to let impulse or fear get us turned around so that we’re not following Him. The metaphor of the Isrealites and the cloud is a helpful reminder to let God lead.
